Saghar Siddiqui (1928–1974) was a distinguished Urdu poet from Pakistan, renowned for his poignant ghazals and profound expression of human emotions.Born Muhammad Akhtar in Ambala, British India, he migrated to Lahore, Pakistan, in 1947 at the age of 19.In Lahore, he gained prominence for his poetic recitations and began writing for the film industry.He also launched a literary magazine, which, despite critical acclaim, faced commercial challenges and was eventually discontinued.Over time, Siddiqui became disillusioned by the prevailing corruption and nepotism, leading to personal hardships, including financial ruin and struggles with substance abuse.He spent his later years homeless, often found reciting poetry on the streets of Lahore.On July 19, 1974, he was found deceased on a roadside in Lahore at the age of 46.Despite his tragic end, his poetry continues to resonate, with verses like “Zindagi jabr-e-musalsal kit raah kati hai, janay kis jurm ki payi hai saza yaad nahi” reflecting his deep emotional insights.
